Set up your Alabama filing

When setting up your Alabama return, you'll need to provide the following information.

If you're unsure about any of this information, check your state sales tax registration certificate or call the Alabama Department of Revenue at 334-242-1490 (press 3 for sales tax).

Do you have a physical presence in Alabama?

Physical presence may include: an office, storefront, employee, salesperson, contractor, warehouse, inventory, or trade show attendance.

  • If you answer YES, you'll be asked how many physical locations you have. You’ll then be asked to provide the address for your in-state physical location.
    • Note: TaxJar only supports users who have a single physical location in the state of Alabama.

Your Alabama tax account details

You'll need your sales tax registration information, which was provided to you by the state when you received your sales tax permit.

When did your tax registration take effect?

Enter the date your business first became liable for Alabama sales tax. This is when your collection obligations began and should match the date you gave the state when you registered.

Sales Tax ID

Enter your 14-character state sales and use tax account number.

Registration license type

The license type shown on your Alabama tax registration: Standard Sales & Use Tax (SLS or SLU) or Simplified Sellers Use Tax (SSU).

When did this license take effect?

Enter the date this license took effect.

Sign On ID

This is the Sign-On ID you received from the state when you registered for your sales tax license.

Access Code

The access code the Alabama Department of Revenue gave you. Find it in your portal account or in any email or letter from the department.

Third-Party Password

Password you set in your My Alabama Taxes (MAT) account to allow third-party access.

Tax filing frequency

This is your filing frequency as assigned by the state or local tax authority. If you’re not sure, contact the tax authority.

You'll then see the first tax return we expect to file for you, based on the current date and the filing frequency you selected.

Review and submit

Take a moment to review your filing application. Once you've confirmed that all information is correct, click Submit.

What to expect next

After you give TaxJar third-party access to file for you, here's what will happen:

  • Under review: Within a few days, TaxJar will review your submission for accuracy and process your application.
    • IMPORTANT: Your TaxJar account is created using the email address associated with your Stripe account, so if the TaxJar team needs to contact you, this is the email address we use by default. (Follow these instructions if you want to change this email address within your TaxJar account).
  • Filing setup complete: Once TaxJar processes your application, you'll get an email when it's time to review your first filing.
  • File your first tax return: When your first filing period is due, you’ll receive an email to review the return before TaxJar submits it.
