California: CDTFA Third Party Access Security Code

Why do I need this code to set up automated filing for California?

  • TaxJar needs third party access to your CDTFA account to verify that we have all of the information needed to file your California Sales Tax Returns.

Why can't I set up my California filing if I don't have a valid third party access security code?

In order to ensure that your returns are filed in time to meet the state's due date, we must have your valid security code to file by 5pm ET on the last day of the month before your first requested return is due.

For security purposes, the code is sent in a letter that the state mails to the account owner address on file. It can take up to 2 weeks to arrive after the state sends it out to you.

How can I receive this access code sooner?

After you have submitted your CA enrollment form to initiate the mailing of the this access code, you can expedite the process by calling the state to receive the access codes over the phone.  CDTFA: 1-800-400-7115

  • Be prepared to confirm your identity and necessary core business details like sales tax account number, FEIN/SSN, and registered business name.

Once you receive your code and navigate to your CA registration from your Tax Dashboard and use it to complete the enrollment.

I have a security code letter. How can I tell if it's the right one?

  • Your 3rd party access letter will have a unique look, and will list the name "Senica Ambers" This letter will contain a security code specific to this request and will grant File & Pay access.
  • Instructions on how to provide the required security code will be listed directly on the letter.

Here's an example of the letter you will receive:
