Set up your Illinois filing
When setting up your Illinois return, you'll need to provide the following information.
| If you're unsure about any of this information, check your state sales tax registration certificate or call the Illinois Department of Revenue at 800-732-8866 (say "agent", say or press 3, enter your tax ID or say “I don’t have it"). |
Do you have a physical presence in Illinois?
Physical presence may include: an office, storefront, employee, salesperson, contractor, warehouse, inventory, or trade show attendance.
- If you answer YES, you'll be asked how many physical locations you have. You’ll then be asked to provide the address for your in-state physical location.
- Note: TaxJar only supports users who have a single physical location in the state of Illinois.
Your Illinois tax account details
You'll need your sales tax registration information, which was provided to you by the state when you received your sales tax permit.
When did your tax registration take effect?
Enter the date your business first became liable for Illinois sales tax. This is when your collection obligations began and should match the date you gave the state when you registered.
State Tax ID
Your 8-digit ST-1 or ROT Reseller Account ID.
Postal Code
Enter your 5-digit or 9-digit ZIP code (e.g. 60601 or 60601-1234).
Last Payment Amount
This is the last payment you made for your sales tax account to the state of Illinois. If you’ve never made a sales tax payment to Illinois, enter $0 as the payment amount.
Tax filing frequency
This is your filing frequency as assigned by the state or local tax authority. If you’re not sure, contact the tax authority.
You'll then see the first tax return we expect to file for you, based on the current date and the filing frequency you selected.
Review and submit
Take a moment to review your filing application. Once you've confirmed that all information is correct, click Submit.
Then: Give TaxJar third-party access to file for you
After you complete your filing application, follow the steps to log into your MyTax Illinois account to give TaxJar third-party access to your tax account.
Activate ST-2
- Remote sellers must add or activate their ST-2 prior to enrolling in Illinois. If you don’t have that already activated, call the Illinois DOR Central Registration Division at 217-785-3707 or by email: REV.CentReg@Illinois.gov
Confirm Third-Party Access is Enabled
- Select Manage My Profile.

- Select Manage Third Party Access.
- Your third party settings should match the below. If they don’t match, please select each option to update:
- Allowed: Yes
- Default Access: Third Party
